MAKING HISTORY

Making History is a visual meditation painted on the civic parking garage in the year 2000 speculating on how Hayward’s historic city hall might have looked when artisans were crafting the building’s decoration back in 1930. The columns and bucrania ornamenting on this mural can still be seen on the original building located just down the street. In 2010 they put a second story on the parking garage and there are a few more cracks in the concrete wall, but it is still in pretty good shape. The original design had painted live cows and goats depicted as models, but some folks thought it made the mural look a bit too country. While painting this mural, John Pugh was creating an elegant trompe’l’oiel on the opposite end of the building.
